The problem is that on proprietary hardware, it's often not possible to use this feature on FOSS operating systems like OpenWrt, since it requires blobs not present in mainline Linux. The issue is that these devices are fundamentally embedded MIPS systems that do not have the processing power to handle even 1 Gbps streams in software (you need a proper x86 system, or a high-end router, preferably DPI-capable, for that), so instead of doing NAT in the OS, stock firmware uses NAT offloading to perform network-address translation in hardware.
